Ubuntu 10.04: New Features and a Manual But Still Linux

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Lucid Lynx | 40Tech Credit given where credit’s due, Ubuntu, and other Linux distributions based on Ubuntu (like Linux Mint and Jolicloud which we will cover soon), have made massive strides in terms of features and usability. The features and raw speed of Ubuntu’s latest release (10.04), Lucid Lynx, are very enticing to the tech curious, especially those who like software alternatives and getting stuff for free. Be warned, however, if you are not familiar with the background workings of Linux (Ubuntu or otherwise), even a shiny new integrated help manual may not be enough to get you to jumpship.

3 Free Tools to Encrypt Individual Evernote Notes

encryption lockWe’ve previously written about how to lock down Evernote from prying eyes, on your own machine.  That doesn’t protect your data, though, once it is out there on Evernote’s servers.  While it would be horrible for Evernote’s business if your data were hacked into on their end, you can never be too safe.  There is currently no way to encrypt individual Evernote notes, but there are methods for encrypting the contents of individual notes.  Read on for three such methods.  If you are going to use any of these methods on select notes, make sure that you use descriptive note titles, as the contents of those notes will no longer be searchable once encrypted.

Sponsored Posts and Blogging Credibility

image We’ve previously asked for your input on product reviews here at 40Tech.  Now, we have a similar question.  Specifically, when a blog publishes a sponsored post, does that affect how you view that blog?  By "sponsored post," I mean a post similar to what Mashable and Lifehacker sometimes run, where the post is a paid advertisement, but clearly marked as such.  We are asking, because one type of advertising inquiry that we have received concerns sponsored posts.  We asked the same question on our Facebook fan page, but we get much more traffic here on the site.

Google Wave Gets More Useful With Templates & Remove Users Feature

Google Wave Gets More Useful With Templates, Remove Users Feature | 40Tech When Google Wave hit the world last year, it came with many oohs and ahhs and an onset of geeky people like me and you — then reality set in and, for many, Wave lost its appeal. People complained that it was slow and confusing, often in the same breath as praising it for being brilliant and innovative.

The biggest issue, however, that kept Wave from mass adoption, was that people just couldn’t figure out what to use it for. In an effort to address such concerns and continue building out the platform, Google has released several major feature updates over the past months; the most recent of which aims to increase the usability of Google Wave by adding use-templates for new waves, and the ability to remove a user (including yourself) from a wave.

Hit the jump for details.

Task Manager Comparison: Toodledo vs. Remember the Milk

Toodledo vs Remember the Milk This post needs to start with a disclaimer.  I was initially going to compare two task managers, Remember the Milk and Toodledo, giving equal time to both as I put them through the paces.  But along the way, something strange happened.  As I put the two services to the test, I fell head over heels for one of them.  I’m talking about the kind of love I previously have only felt for Evernote and LastPass.  This post will still touch upon both Remember the Milk and Toodledo, as each one is useful in its own way, but you will see a bias here, and a more thorough discussion of Toodledo, as I abandoned Remember the Milk after a few days of using both.
