Top 10 Posts of 2010

top 10 posts of 2010

The end of the year is fast approaching, which means that it must be time for  . . .  a year-end list.  In this list, we’re going to look at the ten most popular posts of 2010 on 40Tech, based on page views.  Please note that these are posts that were published in 2010.  Is this a silly exercise, since posts from earlier in the year had more time to accumulate page views?  Yep.  Is that going to stop us from taking a look at the stats anyway?  Nope.

Who Are You, Anyway? A Look At 40Tech Reader Demographics

40tech visitors

We know that we all like tech, or at least that we recognize the necessity of it.  But beyond that, how much do we have in common?  If you wonder how you match up with the “typical” 40Tech reader, here are some stats for you to chew on.  These numbers are for the last 30 days, and are gathered from Google Analytics.

Nationality

48% of you are from the U.S.A.  The next closest is the U.K., whose residents make up 7.2% of the visitors here, followed by Canada, at 6.3%.  Australia has 3.2%.  Only the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain exceed 2%.  Of our U.S. visitors, 8.64% of you are from California, 4.02% are from New York, and 3.66% are from Texas.

The Browser Wars

Chrome has almost caught up to Firefox as the browser of choice among 40Tech readers, but isn’t quite there.  Firefox accounts for 33.09% of the visits, with Chrome registering 29.96%.  Safari is a distant third at 18.02%, with Internet Explorer at 14.81% and Opera at 1.8%.

Operating Systems

64.77% of you use Windows, while 20.21% of you use Macs.  The other operating systems that had numbers worth noting were iPhone (4.2%), iPad (3.92%), Linux (3.58%), Android (2.13%), and iPod (0.52%).  (Don’t tell Google that iPhone, iPad, and iPod aren’t actually the names of operating systems).  All totaled, mobile devices make up 10.93% of the visits to the site.

Screen resolutions

You folks sure do use a wide variety of screen resolutions, including 1280×800 (16.41%), 1680×1050 (11.17%), 1440×900 (10.98%), and 1280×1024 (10.26).  Several other resolutions rounded out the rest of the stats.

Odds and Ends

About 48% of you are using a version (or older) of Flash player that was outdated back in September, and has security vulnerabilities.  Check your version, and update if you don’t have the current version.

Most of you use are on a high speed connection, although 12.28% of you are using dial up.  To you, we apologize.  We don’t test 40Tech on slow connections, so hopefully the site speeds are tolerable.

How do you fit in with the rest of the crew?  (And did we miss any exciting stats that interest you?  Perhaps screen colors excite you?  We’ve got stats on that, too.).

Our Favorite Finds, Coming Soon [Site News]

finding other content

Here at 40Tech, we don't have an exclusive on good content.  We spend time checking out many other sites on the Internet, and find all sorts of great stuff.  Some of that content might be from sites that you visit, but much of the content may be new to you.  Starting Monday, we'll be sharing our finds with you.  Our posts will be short, calling attention to the content on the original site.  If a topic interests you, we hope that you'll then go check it out in full detail at its source.

We have been publishing about three posts a week.  We're going to try to double that, so that we have our usual three "long form" posts each week, and three posts highlighting great finds from around the Internet.

Find a nugget out there that you think other readers would find interesting?  Have a tip for a post?  Let us know at our "Suggest a Post" Contact Form.

Josh Farkas Joins 40Tech

josh1 I'm pleased to announce that Josh Farkas has joined 40Tech as a writer.  His debut post will be going live later today.  Actually, his post today will be his second post for 40Tech, as Josh was the winner of our first writer's contest.  The winner of that contest won a lifetime subscription to GTDagenda, and also received an invitation to become a regular writer on 40Tech.  We're pleased that Josh accepted our invitation.  To see his winning entry, check out Josh's take on GTDagenda.

Josh works as an attorney in the energy sector, and is passionate about the potential that technology and alternative energy hold for the future.  Keep your eye out for his post later this evening, which contemplates how lo-tech devices are sometimes a better choice than their high-tech counterparts.  In the meantime, you can check out his profile here at 40Tech.

Welcome aboard, Josh!

Coming Soon – 40Tech Gear Picks

We haven’t done much in the way of gear and gadget reviews here at 40Tech.  That’s about to change.  In the near future, we’ll be debuting 40Tech Picks, where we’ll spotlight gadgets that we REALLY like.  At the present time, we don’t receive review units, so this will be gear that we use on a regular basis.  We’re going to try to make these spotlights and reviews easily digestible, and from the perspective of "real users" – people who will use the gear like you and we would use it.

Pretty soon, you’ll also notice a "40Tech Picks" section on the navigation menu, above.  Clicking on that will take you to a page where all of our picks are listed.  We’re going to start by populating it with the handful of gear reviews that we’ve already done.  Future picks will appear on the front page of the site, but also in that section.
