Siri Shortcuts and Things →

“Hey Siri, Add a new Writing task”
This example creates a new task in Things within my ‘Writing’ area, assigned to Today, and presents me with a pre-filled quick-entry window where I can add the title and hit save.

I’ve already created almost 50 Siri Shortcuts, but I haven’t done much in the way of integrating Siri Shortcuts with Things. I’ve only set up a couple Siri Shortcuts to filter my tasks with particular tag/list combinations. Follow the link above, though, for some really good examples of Siri Shortcuts set up to create tasks in Things. The post inspired me to set up a few.

Apple discontinues its own photo printing service, recommends third-party Photos Projects apps instead →

Apple is discontinuing its Photo Print Products service, which has been integrated into iPhoto since its launch in 2002. The service expanded from simple prints, to albums, photo books, and calendars.

Maybe I’m a dinosaur, but I used this service every year to make a Mother’s Day calendar for my wife and our daughter’s grandmothers. The story does mention some third-party apps that include Photos Projects extensions, so this isn’t a complete loss. Still, I’m sad to see it go. I hope the third-party solutions are as elegant as the Apple solution.

Add a Folder to the Sidebar in DEVONthink for Easy Access →

Drag this folder to the Favorites section of DEVONthink’s sidebar. This will give you quick access to the group.

The post at the link talks about how to use DEVONthink as a “read it later” service, but that’s not what caught my eye. I had no idea you could add folders to the Favorites section of the sidebar. You can do it by either dragging a folder onto the word “Favorites” in the sidebar (I couldn’t drag it directly to the spot I wanted among my favorites – it went to the bottom automatically), or by right-clicking on a folder/group, and choosing “Add to Favorites.” I still learn something new about DEVONthink almost every week, and I’ve been using the program for several years now.

Understanding Shortcuts in iOS 12 →

I’m seeing a bunch of people saying Shortcuts are a power user-only feature. “No normal person will ever use these!” In their WWDC keynote, I think Apple leaned too hard into what Shortcuts can do for power users, and people lost the message that these are something users will benefit from even if they do zero work to set them up. Let me explain.

This is the best and most understandable overview of the Shortcuts feature coming in iOS 12, and explains how even “regular” users can utilize them. The article is worth a full read. If you aren’t someone who gets excited about the news coming out of Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference, you may not have heard about Shortcuts, an upcoming automation tool/framework/feature in iOS 12. Birchler also has a podcast on the topic that is next up in my feed.

Finder’s Stationery Pad Feature – How Is This Not More Well Known? →

Stationery Pad is a handy way to nix a step in your workflow if you regularly use document templates on your Mac. The long-standing Finder feature essentially tells a file’s parent application to open a copy of it by default, ensuring that the original file remains unedited.

Follow the link for a way to set any file on your Mac to be a template file, so you don’t overwrite it. I don’t feel bad for not knowing about this trick, since I’ve never heard it discussed, and since the name doesn’t really describe what it does. On the other hand, I feel stupid for never wondering what that checkbox does. This will be very handy for automation tools like Keyboard Maestro.
