Tron, Baby! New, Improved & Still Awesome

Tron - New, Improved, Still Awesome

Tron was one of the highlights of my youth, and it remains one of my favourite movies to this day — I even have the __ anniversary DVD. What’s not to like? It takes place in a video game for Pete’s sake! It was also one off the first movies to make serious use of 3D graphics, which adds just enough geek to make it worthy of a mention on 40Tech.

I’ve known that the sequel is coming out for several months now, and have seen a trailer or two, but this one *points below* has me ready to spend my money all willy nilly and actually looking forward to the coming of what is sure to be a 3D movie. I’m normally annoyed by the 3D craze – Justin Bieber 3D?? Come on, Seriously!?.

Check out the trailer/Daft-Punk-music-video, and note the highlighting of returning cast members. I don’t think you’ll be able to tell me that it doesn’t give you that geek-boy – geek-person – itch.

Uncluttered Visual Search for Craigslist and Other Online Shops With Spotli

Uncluttered Visual Search for Craigslist, Other Online Shops | 40Tech

I don’t know about you, but I rarely even look at a Craigslist post that doesn’t have a photo of the product attached to it. I don’t see the point. If someone doesn’t take the time to take a photo of what they’re selling, I simply don’t trust it — and I really don’t want to drive to wherever that person lives for a first look at my potential purchase, you know? Spotli has made my life easier by providing a visual search tool for Craigslist and other places to buy online.

I know that you can already filter Craigslist to only show items with photos, but searching Craigslist is not a pretty experience. At all. It’s uglier than Google — and that’s saying something. Spotli will take your search, even narrowed down to city-level, and display an eye-pleasing grid of images, complete with title and pricing information. Hover over the image that catches your eye and it will expand to a slightly larger size for easier viewing. Click on the image and you will go directly to the listing.

Spotli Visual Craigslist Search | 40Tech

You might wonder what the point is of some of the other online shops (Ebay, Amazon, Best Buy, Buy.com, Overstock.com, Discount School Supply) — after all, they are already visual sites. I find that I like the interface of Spotli much better, however, and highly recommend that you give it a try. I would actually like to see even more stores added, as well as a Canadian option.

Spotli is fully usable without registration, even the Coupons & Deals section, but registering does give a little back, such as saved searches, minor Facebook Connect (to invite friends), and the possibility of more tools in future — maybe sharing functionality for found items?

My only wish for Spotli would be the ability to have my search term be persistent across all stores, so that I don’t need to type it in repeatedly when price-matching. If that were also integrated into the saved search functionality, Spotli could become the perfect shopping companion for me. How about you? What are your thoughts on Spotli? Know of any similar services?

Two Free Android Apps to Control Your Computer (Windows, Mac, Linux)

Two Free Android Apps to Control Your Computer Windows, Mac, Linux | 40Tech

If you have an Android device and want to use it to control your desktop’s (or laptop’s) mouse and keyboard, two of your best free options are RemoteDroid and Gmote.

RemoteDroid is a minimalist’s dream — nothing fancy to its wireframe trackpad/button look — and is a little light on the feature side of things, but it is a great way to control a presentation or media PC. It also handles multitouch gestures, such as the two-fingered scrolling option of multitouch trackpads.

Gmote does a little bit more than RemoteDroid, such as allowing you to serve media content from your PC to your Android device. No multitouch trackpad support here, and there are some media playback issues when streaming, but playback to devices is still a beta feature, and the developer seems to be active with updates.

Both of these remote control apps require you to download a server program to your Windows, Mac or Linux machine, and both are available for free. If you need a way to generally control your desktop or laptop remotely, or want a convenient media centre remote control, then give these two a try.

Have you tried any alternative remote control apps for Android? How do they stack up?

Will “Diminished Reality” Be a Tool for Censorship?

Will Diminished Reality Be Used for Censorship? | 40Tech

A team of researchers in Germany (from Technische Universität Ilmenau) have developed a new technology called “Diminished Reality” that allows real time removal of unwanted objects from a video. It’s an amazing piece of tech; almost seamless, even with complex textures. The offending objects are destroyed and blended into the background as if they never existed — for every frame — and it all happens in milliseconds.

The applications that Diminished Reality could be put toward are many, from personal, to corporate, to government and news media. Imagine being able to remove your ex from that family reunion video; or how about that embarrassing stain that you didn’t notice until you watched the recording back? Maybe this would be a good way to to quickly edit your film — or set up a replacement video for those pesky museum guards to watch… *ahem*

The application of Diminished Reality that immediately comes to mind, however, is censorship — specifically censorship in news footage that could be used for propaganda purposes and the like. Even “live” feeds are potential vehicles in US programming, if the software can be adapted to work with the imposed five-second delay on live broadcasts (thank you Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson). If that happens, the marketing term “Diminished Reality” will take on literal meaning. I am very intrigued to see where this tech will go in the near future.

Forget Lego! Build Your Geekdom With Minecraft

Build Your Geekdom with Minecraft | 40Tech

Minecraft is all kinds of insane. It’s called a computer game, technically, but it’s really more like Lego — Lego that you can use to build your own, well… pretty much anything!

For example, you might have heard about this one fellow that built the framework of the USS Enterprise D (Star Trek: The Next Generation). Yeah, he built it on a 1:1 scale. 1:1!! Do you have any idea how HUGE that is? If you don’t, not to worry — the builder’s words on the subject leave very little to the imagination. He put out a call on YouTube a couple of weeks ago, showcasing his creation and asking for people to help him out in creating the interior of every room on the ship. Pretty amazing, really, but I can’t imagine the time and patience required to build such a thing out of 1 metre cubed blocks.

A couple of other notable Minecraft creations, as posted by the site Teksocial, are a relatively scale model of the Empire State Building, and a model of the Earth. That’s right: somebody sat down at their computer and actually created the Earth, one block at a time. Nuts.
