Momentous tech day for me – just wiped my Evernote account. First used it almost a decade ago and had been a huge fan, but have been DEVONthink-only for a couple years. Also just kicked my office PC to the curb. Will use Parallels on my Mac when I need Windows.

@40Tech Evernote hasn’t been a quality product for some time

Verso says:
@PhoneBoy While true, I really like being able to put everything there. What’s your alternate?

ciaran says:
@Verso You might try DEVONthink. It’s a very powerful everything bucket…

@Verso @phoneboy I have been on evernote seemingly for ever … and do the pro 40 bucks thing – but wont be renewing this feb … I will keep evernote free on my two macs – but on ios i use a combo of notes – which is pretty powerful these days, instapaper and feedly – but all our needs are different … for me the key is that to pay for something has to offer me something – evernote doesn’t do that anymore

PhoneBoy says:
@Verso I just use Notes.app for the handful of things I need.

@ciaran @Verso @JohnPhilpin @PhoneBoy Another vote for DEVONthink. I started slow a few years back, and eventually dove in 100%. The revamp of the iOS app a year or two ago was key.

@Zak never heard of Bear – but VERY much like the look of it – thank-you … do you know Editorial and IAWriter … both of which I have.
…. note ‘have’ … not necessarily ‘use’ …. are they similar ?

JohnPhilpin says:
@ciaran @40tech I have looked at DevonThink off and on for years … maybe time to look at it again … i worry that it is overly complicted for my needs …
that said – maybe time to do it again
any recommendations as to which of the products I should try :
http://www.devontechnologies.com/download/...
the fact that they have so many choices before you even commit makes me hesitant about the product itself … or am I worrying too much ?

@JohnPhilpin @40tech There are just the 3 (macOS) versions of DEVONthink. For testing, why not go with the top tier (Pro Office?). You can always buy something less later if you decide it’s overkill. One other tip—setup feels a bit overwhelming. But if you plunge ahead, (and read some of the manual), you’ll find the investment of time worth it.

@JohnPhilpin According to their Support doc on syncing, it’s iCloud via CloudKit. Glad you like it!

Verso says:
@jacob I honestly don’t mind subscriptions, or paying for them. I mind wasting money on something that is not useful or valuable. I guess I’m off to buy the Take Control book so I can dig into this!

@Zak many thanks

@JohnPhilpin @ciaran @Verso @PhoneBoy @40Tech I quit Evernote and switched over to Devonthink. I really wanted to like DT but the sync was not that great. It always seemed like I was waiting for iOS to finish syncing. I finally broke down and went back to Evernote. I should also mention I tried Bear but did not like the fact I could not store PDF.

Verso says:
@wilson Thanks! I store lots of (small) PDFs and images and such, so this is a big feature for me.

@JohnPhilpin The great thing is that the DEVONthink Mac app has an unbelievable trial. You can use it for 150 HOURS. If you don’t leave it running all the time, that could last you quite a while to try a particular version.
