With fall now in full swing and winter just around the corner, people are putting on their “germaphobe” hats, armored t-shirts and gloves — and, of course, posts about ways to protect yourself from the invisible nasties have started to hit the blogosphere. One such post, just today on My Life Scoop, detailed some tech solutions to combat germs that I thought I would share with you; two, in particular. After all, tech isn’t always about computers and related objects and software… a fact that I need to remind myself of, on occasion.
UV-C Light
This is based on a specific frequency of ultraviolet light that kills germies dead. Apparently it kills more that 99% of many common molds, allergens, bacteria, germs, etc, and is clean, affordable, and safe for all surfaces. This is what they use to sterilize things in some hospitals. You can get it in a Guardian Mini Wand, or in a Halo vacuum (which, is apparently a good thing, as, accourding to the article, a square inch of carpet holds about four times as many germs as a “typical” toilet seat… freaky, eh?).
Steam
Pick up a steam mop, like Steamboy by Reliable, if you want to scald the germs off of your kitchen and bathroom floor. It works well, and refills are cheap.
Check out the article below for the full list of four.
4 High-Tech Weapons for the War Against Germs [My Life Scoop]

Ick. I understand how you feel Dave. Actually, the UV-C wand is what you need. It’s portable, not too expensive, and kills germy-germs dead.

Yep, that UV-C wand is exactly what we need for computers and shared tech items. A couple of years ago I was in a group that was getting into “extreme programming,” including sharing a keyboard with a partner all day! Talk about “Ack!” I can just imagine saying, “Just give me a minute…let me hold this UV-C wand over the keyboard..” when it’s my turn. ;) Would be great for any yucky shared items!

They should really have an army of the things in call centres and any office that shares cubicles…

Share my keyboard? You’ll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands first.

Heh — I understand.

My thoughts exactly!

Unsure if you know but there are keyboards now coated with something or made with some sort of plastic that inhibits the growth of bacteria.
I think they are expensive tho.
/just searched but couldn’t find them lol but I assure you they do exist. I have no idea on how effective they are tho.

Thanks for the tip, Dave — I think that substance would be Microban. It’s actually mentioned as the 4th item in the original My Life Scoop post. They didn’t mention keyboards specifically though. Microban isn’t designed to kill germs, as you say it is more of a way to keep the nasties from taking root.

Heres one with Microban Bobby. Not as expensive as I first thought.

Nice! Thanks for that! That’s about $100/120 in Canada after taxes. Not as expensive as I thought either — but I’d still buy that UV-C light first. Portable, multiple uses, yadda yadda.

My toothbrush has a uv sanitizer and I also always wipe my keyboard, phone, remote control, cell, etc. With antibacterial wet wipes…….

Your toothbrush has one? Handy. I’m going to have to tell my wife about such things — they’ll help the nurse in her sleep better at night.

I will send you one…
