10 Essential Apps (6 Free) For Mac Newbies

A few months ago, I took the plunge, headfirst, into Apple’s world. I bought a MacBook Air and, for the first time since my family’s Apple IIe 25 years ago, I was regularly using something other than a Windows machine. While there were several apps that I installed that are also available on Windows, it was fun to discover some Mac-only applications. Here are the first 10 such apps that I installed. This list doesn’t include apps that were pre-installed on the Air, like iMovie or iPhoto. It also doesn’t include apps that can be found on Windows, which I’ll cover some other day.

Bring Sanity To Tabbed Browsing With Tabbed Groups [Firefox]

I’m not very loyal when it comes to web browsers. For years, I used Firefox, but I made the switch over to Chrome when its extension ecosystem matured enough to be usable. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Firefox, though, and the release of Firefox 4 on March 22 prompted me to take it for a spin. The verdict? I like it. It feels faster than Chrome, although that might be because my Chrome installation has become bloated over time. I’ve also started playing around with Firefox’s Tab Groups, which are a big help in organizing tabs. Read more

As technology increasingly creeps into our lives, we have more devices that require Internet or network connectivity. In the past, many of us had a computer or two on our networks. Now, we have gaming consoles, DVR’s, streaming devices, and more. In my house, I count 10 devices that regularly connect to my network, not counting my smartphone.
