If you could only get one, which would it be? Assume you already have a Series 3 Watch & a 2012 Mac Mini (used as a media server), but you don’t have a HomePod:
- HomePod
- Apple Watch Series 4
- wait for new Mac Mini
Asking for a friend, who is leaning toward HomePod.
ChrisJWilson says:
@40Tech a new thing opens up new possibilities so the HomePod? But if the Mac mini really has issues then it’s probably better to replace that.

@40Tech I wouldn’t get the Series 4 if you already own the Series 3.
Although not perfect I absolutely love my HomePod. But it is still pretty limited if you want more then music streaming. If you are pushing your Mac Mini to it’s limits that might be the better choice

@40Tech Well the budget minded part of my brain would pick the Mac mini – because it doesn’t exist yet so involves spending no money. And tech purchases delayed tend to mean, once purchased, they’re better/improved.
The gratification side of my brain would pick the HomePod. I don’t own one due to its limitations, but the sound is great.

@40Tech I’ve had my HomePod for 5 months. If you have Apple Music, big yes. Just make sure your expectations are set for the capabilities of today with an eye towards what’s possible with software updates. Comparing to Alexa will guarantee disappointment.

@ChrisJWilson This is gonna be a tough call.

@jl_siewert I can probably limp by with the Mini for a bit longer. I have a Sonos and don’t use it much, but I’m so tempted by the HomePod.

@ronguest This is a tough call. This morning I was leaning toward the Watch, as I realize how much I use it.

40Tech says:
@chet We recently unplugged our Alexa because we used it so little. Of course, I don’t use the Sonos much either. Hmm. Maybe the Watch is calling.

@40Tech I think I’d totally go for the HomePod!
September 13, 2018 — 11:37 am
40Tech says:
@mbjones I’m now going back and forth between that and the Watch, or just remaining frozen by indecision and putting off the decision until later.

@40Tech I’d get the watch!

40Tech says:
@Aleen That’s what I’m leaning toward (but ask me again in an hour) because of how much I use my current one.

@40Tech I already have an inexpensive mediocre Bluetooth speaker set in the front room that I don’t use often, so I’d go for the Mac Mini upgrade, especially since I’m not sure the old one will run Mojave (read: get security updates for the foreseeable future).

@40Tech I can understand (although my back and forth is with mini and HomePod). The watch is quite amazing but not as much of a “need” on my part.

40Tech says:
@adiabatic Good point. Hadn’t thought about the potential update issue.

@40Tech I would get the HomePod, because while the Series 4 is nice its not a big enough change from the Series 3 to justify an upgrade.

@40Tech I have a Mac mini (2014), Apple Watch Series 3 and a HomePod and I would say go for the HomePod. I absolutely love the device and the sound is brilliant.

@40Tech I’d say HomePod, unless they have specific complaints about the Mac mini—a new category of device will probably be more appreciated than an upgrade of an old one.
