Audible.com – Review

Today, 40Tech is pleased to present a guest post by Larry Behrens from PoorDadTech.Com.

audible

It started with a Facebook ad, of all things. Those ads that are over there to the right of the page promising you free gadgets, free girls or fake farms. This one offered me a free audio book of an autobiography I was debating over. I resolved to deal with only one page of spam and clicked on it. Months later what I have found is if you really buy a lot of books, this could be a way to get more for a little less.

I’m talking about Audible.Com. Before you click away thinking I’m a hack for their company I’d like to throw two numbers at you: 15 and 3.  The 15 is the current number of books in my library on Audible.com, 3 is the average price (in dollars) that I paid per book. That’s it right there.  Read more

Springpad vs Evernote — Why It Might Be Better…

Springpad vs Evernote -- It Might Be Better | 40Tech A few weeks back, while researching for my comparison review of Shelfster and Evernote, I stumbled upon another alternative to collect information and organize your life: Springpad. I had the pleasure of speaking with the CEO and co-founder of Springpad, Jeff Janer (formerly of Third Screen Media and Britemoon) — and I have to say, Evernote user or not, Springpad may have a place in your life.

To test this theory against my normal giddy excitement for new tech, I got my wife to try it — and, let me tell you, if my wife can find a new piece of tech both useful and exciting, then it may just be one of the best bits software to appear in a long, long time.

How to Use Your Scanner as a Fax Machine

ringcentral Do you want to be able to send faxes from home, without having to install another phone line, or share your current line?  How would you like to be able to receive faxes anywhere that you have an internet connection?  Or how about sending a fax via email?  That is all possible now, using online fax services.  The online fax service I’ve been using is RingCentral, an internet telephone service that also offers faxing.

Why RingCentral?  After a couple of years of coping with the flakiness of fax over VOIP, I decided I wanted a solution that was more reliable. I also needed a solution that was simple, since I wouldn’t be the only one using it.  RingCentral’s price was right, too, compared to other online fax services.  Read on for my impressions of RingCental, and an explanation of how I I set up RingCentral’s fax service, so that I could easily use my Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 and my computer to send faxes.  If you want to print faxes, you’ll also need a printer. Opera Mini for iPhone: First Impressions

Opera Mini for iPhone | First Impressions | 40Tech When I heard, yesterday, that Apple had approved the Opera Mini browser for iPhone, I was a bit more than surprised — I was shocked. Apple’s track record in rejecting any app that might interfere with their business plans or control over their userbase seemed to scream that there was absolutely no way they would let a competitor browser into their little empire. It was an exciting prospect: a blazingly fast, low data-impact, full-featured browser? With features that Mobile Safari is painfully lacking like on-page search? Oh I had to see this for myself! In my testing, I discovered a lot of cool features — unfortunately, though, I came away from my first few runs of Opera Mini more than a bit disappointed.
