How to Use Twitter Lists

Bobby Travis also author’s the Bluetoque Marketing Tips blog. This post is a first in a Twitter Series cross-venture with 40Tech and is featured on both sites.

Twitter Lists of Evan Williams (@ev), the CEO of Twitter Earlier this month, Twitter finally launched Twitter Lists, a groups feature that helps you to easily organize and share the people you follow (or are just interested in), and view what they’re tweeting about without being hit over the head by the tweets of your (likely) massive general follow list. For example, maybe you want to view only the tweets from your favourite tech blog writers or business peers — all you would need to do is create an appropriately named list and add only those people into it, and whenever you want an update from that group, click on the list in your Twitter sidebar. Voila! Instant filter! I know, I know, many of the Twitter apps you are using probably already do something similar, but Twitter Lists is more than just a simple grouping or filter mechanism. There are a few key features that may make a huge difference in both the way you use Twitter and your reputation and credibility on Twitter.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy in the Computer Age

Collage of several of w:Gray's muscle pictures...

Well, it’s official, we live in the age of computers. Surprised? Ok, so you’re probably not — but that only serves to illustrate my point. These are the days where people are often attached to their machinery for hours and hours and sometimes days at a time; and because you geeky folks out there reading this post are so very well informed, you are probably equally aware of the rise in health issues that are related to said machinery. That’s right, I’m talking everything from arthritis, to heart attacks, to severe anxiety linking back, in many ways, to that thing attached to that soul-sucking monitor on your desk (or lap) — especially if you work from home. Which I do.

So that, in conjunction with my current bout with a very annoying cold that I was only too glad to confirm was not Swine Flu, inspired a small amount of research on maintaining a healthy outlook as one of today’s trending geek-boys. Read on and enjoy! Read more

7 Tips for a Smooth Upgrade From XP to Windows 7

Windows 7 Logo | 40tech Due to the crap that was the Vista operating system (at least without 4 GB of ram and a few tricks up your sleeve), many people have skipped the OS altogether and stuck with XP. Many of those same people, however, are excited to try out the much vaunted Windows 7 operating system, due out tomorrow for public consumption. Windows 7 is touted to be everything that Vista was supposed to be and more, and even some die hard Windows haters have given the new OS grudgingly good reviews. However, there is one major snag in the upgrade to Windows 7 from XP: you can’t actually upgrade it. You have to do a clean install. This can cause some problems for people as they will lose all of their programs, settings, and more. To that end, here are seven quick tips to help your install be a little more smooth and butter-like.

Be a (HTC) Hero — Android-ilize your Windows Mobile Phone with PointSense

PointSense Suite V2 by BlueOcean | HTC Sense UI clone HTC has been knocking the socks off of the Windows Mobile universe for a while now with increasingly beautiful and functional UI (user interface) designs for their Windows Mobile phones. Now they have done it again with the release of the HTC Hero and the very spiffy Sense UI design. The only problem is, the Hero is an Android phone, and Sense UI (for the moment) is only on Android as well. Not to be out-modded, the Windows Mobile user-developer communities dove in headfirst in various attempts to clone, or at least nearly match, the Sense interface. Of the many themes and mods that surfaced, the PointSense Suite, built on the very slick and finger-friendly Pointui Home 2 interface, stands out as one of the best.

10 Pain-Reducing Steps to Take Before Upgrading to Windows 7

windows7install If Windows 7 presales are any indication, many of you will be upgrading from Windows XP or Vista in a few months.  Many of you will likely choose the “clean install” route, completely wiping your hard drives and starting fresh.  Although reformatting usually can make for a more solid installation, it can cause headaches if you haven’t prepared ahead of time.  With that in mind, I’ve put together a checklist of 10 steps to take prior to upgrading to Windows 7, to save you time later.  This list could also apply to any of you who are reinstalling a current operating system, if you don’t have an image of your hard drive for an easy restoration.  In a future post, I’ll take a look at steps to take after upgrading to Windows 7.  I intend for this to be a “living” list, so please chime in with other suggestions in the comments.  My hope is to be able to then take these suggestions, and post an updated list closer to the release of Windows 7.  Without further adieu, here is the list.
