We’ve previously written about how to root your Android phone. One of the reasons that some people root their phones is so that they can install a custom ROM. Put in overly simple terms, your smartphone’s ROM consists of the core data of your phone, and can include such data as boot data and the phone’s operating system. A custom ROM is a customized image that alters the function of your device. You can find custom ROMs online – or you can cook up your own ROM with an online tool if you have a Samsung Captivate or Galaxy S.

To make your own ROM, head on over to Rom Kitchen. Rom Kitchen allows you to choose the launcher, base apps, utilities, keyboard, and theme that you want in your ROM. Once you’re done making your selections, hit the “Generate” button, and wait while your ROM is generated.

Installing the ROM is a different matter entirely. A few sites have some instructions on how to install custom ROMs, so make sure you know what you’re doing before proceeding.

We’ll offer the usual words of caution – make sure that you backup your phone, and install a custom ROM at your own risk. You run the risk of bricking your phone.

Have you tried to install a custom ROM on your phone?
