Our Favorite Finds, Coming Soon [Site News]

finding other content

Here at 40Tech, we don't have an exclusive on good content.  We spend time checking out many other sites on the Internet, and find all sorts of great stuff.  Some of that content might be from sites that you visit, but much of the content may be new to you.  Starting Monday, we'll be sharing our finds with you.  Our posts will be short, calling attention to the content on the original site.  If a topic interests you, we hope that you'll then go check it out in full detail at its source.

We have been publishing about three posts a week.  We're going to try to double that, so that we have our usual three "long form" posts each week, and three posts highlighting great finds from around the Internet.

Find a nugget out there that you think other readers would find interesting?  Have a tip for a post?  Let us know at our "Suggest a Post" Contact Form.

OpenAppMkt May Solve Apple App Store Woes

OpenAppMkt May Solve Apple App Store Woes | 40Tech

Everybody knows that the folks over at Apple are flighty, at best, when it comes to what is allowed or rejected from their App Store. They have their, reasons, of course, but those reasons are often unclear to the public, or even to the developers of iPhone and iPad apps. Apple's rejection of, or sudden pulling or neutering of apps has been the subject of much contention and even a few blog posts here at 40Tech. There may be a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, though, with OpenAppMkt.

iphone jailbreak

Today, 40Tech is pleased to present a guest post by Tony Hue from LonePlacebo.  Tony's post is especially timely, in light of the U.S. Library's of Congress ruling that jailbreaking an iPhone does NOT violate copyright.  Apple, of course, says that jailbreaking does void your warranty, and that it can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably, so proceed at your own risk.

Since this article was published, our guest author, Tony, has sent us this link to a video that shows a new two step method for jailbreaking your iPhone.  Here it is, embedded:

Jailbreaking is the process of reconfiguring the restrictions Apple places on the iPod Touch and iPhone firmware to allow you to gain access to any code on your device. One familiar case is with Apple's App Store. We all know that all apps must undergo an approval process before it is available to download at the App Store. The applications that are not approved, however, sometimes end up at third-party application installers like Cydia.

Sync Tool Comparison: Dropbox vs. Syncplicity vs. SugarSync

synchronize

Last year, we wrote about 5 Tools to Keep You Synchronized Everywhere.  That post covered not just tools to sync files, but tools to sync your workflow (such as using a tool like Lastpass to get your passwords everywhere).  How about different options that can be used to keep your files in sync, with no effort on your part?  Here are three options that are "fire and forget," meaning that once you configure them, your files will be continuously synced between computers, with no effort on your part.  Read on for our take on which ones come out on top.

When Does Low-Tech Work Better For You?

I received my Droid X this week, which I think everyone can agree is somewhere near, if not the top, of mobile technological achievement (I’m willing to share the spot with the iPhone 4, but it’s worth pointing out that mine makes calls with or without a case).  The device is truly a testament to what humanity has been able to achieve.  For $99 plus tax, after rebates, I now own a piece of metal, plastic and silicon that more or less fits in my pocket and serves as: a phone; a camera; an HD video camera; a DVR; a music player; a computer; an organizer . . . You get the idea – crazy good technology.  I’ll talk more about it, Android apps, my transition from a Blackberry and an iPhone and more in the future, but holding this marvel of modern technology makes me wonder – what happened to low-tech?
