Join Us For the First Ever 40Tech Community Chat – Wednesday, May 19, 2010

 40Tech community chat

Do you like to talk about tech, but feel like you’re stranded on an island?  Guess what – you’re NOT alone.  We here at 40Tech love to talk about tech, and we’re sure many of you in the community do as well.  So, we’re setting up our first ever 40Tech community chat.  Will it be huge?  Will it flop?  Who knows, but we’re going to have fun in the process.  Read on for the details.

  • The chat will be on Wednesday, May 19 at 9 PM, U.S. Eastern time, 6 PM Pacific.  This is 1:00 AM GMT on Thursday, May 20, 2010.  The chat will last between 30 and 60 minutes.

  • Topics, depending on time:
    • iPad: Are you interested?
    • Balancing tech and your relationship
    • Evernote: Uses, comparisons, wants/needs, integrations, etc.
    • Linux: Just for uber geeks?
    • Do you trust Facebook?
    • Open discussion

  • This will be an audio chat, so you’ll need a microphone.  It also helps if you have a headset, but it isn’t essential.

  • We’re going to use Skype for the chat, so you’ll need to download it and set up an account if you haven’t done so already.  We’re still working out the details of what platform we will use, but we’re leaning towards Talkshoe Ventrilo.

  • For our first chat, we’re going to limit it to 10 8 people (6, plus Bobby and Evan from 40Tech).  If you’re interested, say so in the comments of this post.  Make sure you include you email address in the email part of the comment form, so that we can send you connection details.

  • We might record the chat, and release it later.

If you’re interested, sign up in the comments.  Feel free to suggest topics as well, and if you have questions, fire away!

About Evan Kline

Evan started 40Tech to write about tech from his perspective – that of the average 40-something tech geek. When not writing about tech, you might find him with his beautiful wife and baby girl, out on the ski slopes, or at his real-life job as a lawyer.

  1. “The chat will be on Wednesday, May 19 at 9 PM, U.S. Eastern time, 6 PM Pacific. This is 1:00 AM GMT on Thursday, May 13, 2010″. Not sure that GMT time is quite right chaps, otherwise that’s one hell of a time difference!

  2. Good catch! I just fixed it.

  3. I’d like to join in on this. Added to my Calendar.

    • Great, Anthony! I was hoping you’d join in. We’ll be sending out the connection info as we get closer to the date.

    • Also, I saw on your website that you specialize in Audio/Web/Video Conferencing. Any experience with Talkshoe for something like our chat, or would you recommend something else? We’re looking at something easy for even casual users to get on with us.

  4. I am not familiar with Talkshoe, or any type of similar client really that claims to do a bunch of open mics like that. I think honestly over the internet that might be a bit confusing with people talking over each other.

    Sales mode on:

My company, Infinity Conference Call, offers the audio, web, and video conferencing and it really is the simplest thing top use, especially for the casual user just joining.

I would be glad to give you a private demonstration of the service, or actually you can jump in on a public meeting now here (I do them Tue and Thur 10AM – 2PM EST) http://netmeet.infinityconferencecall.com/?meeting=1134156

I am sure my CEO would be glad to “donate” a meeting for the upcoming talk for a real-world test if you like how it works in the demo. then we can see if you would like to use it full-time. I would be glad to be partnered with 40Tech.

Leaving my biz blog & signature this time

    • Thanks Anthony. I can’t jump on now, but would love to try it out some time. We don’t have a budget to pay for a conferencing app, since we’re not profitable yet, but I’d love to take a look at it should we ever be able to afford it at some point in the future. We’re also looking for something that would allow us to record the chat, as well.

  5. Had a blast on the chat! Can’t wait to do it again! :D

  6. Great conversation on the chat and I was glad to be a part of it! Looking forward to the next one.
