My recollection is that the inverter did not work with my laptop, but I don't know if that was the inverter, or the limited amount of juice that airplanes provide. I keep it in my bag, though, to use with my netbook. I spent yesterday loading my netbook with some old games (Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind, Planescape Torment) for a flight to Montana in a few weeks, so I should have a better idea soon how it works with my netbook.

The power inverter idea is a brilliant one! So much of my travel, too, is one part car, one part hotel, one part train, and who knows what else. Has the one you use worked for you? I've read about a bunch of them, debating buying one, but most of them don't seem to be able to handle powerful gadgets like laptops. What's been your experience?

Agreed - an ethernet cable is essential. I used to carry this massively long thin ethernet cable for when I needed to run it a long stretch, but that got to be too much to carry, so now I have a small one.

I always have an ethernet cable, for times when the wireless is acting up. It's coming in handy right now, when I have a brand new work laptop with a non-functioning wireless system.

And to kick it old school a bit, a couple of pens and composition books.
