Ah, OK. XP vs, Win 7. That makes sense. I thought you were talking XP netbook vs. XP notebook or WIn 7 netbook vs. Win 7 notebook, which didn't make much sense.

My understanding is that MS was trying to protect Vista (and now Windows 7) notebooks, which have higher profit margins. Here's a story on it:

I'm just stumbling across this while researching netbooks for a friend (I may be in touch with you for more info about netbooks). This jumped out at me:

"You won’t find any Windows XP netbooks equipped with more than 1 GB of RAM out of the box, due to licensing issues. Evidently, this is Microsoft’s way of making sure that netbooks don’t cannibalize traditional computer sales."

Why would Microsoft care? In either case, they're selling a Windows license, right?

Frankly speaking, this is not a bad deal at all! I don't really like this brand, but I would have loved something in this Price range coming up from DELL or HP

This week, $329.00 is being asked for the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE Netbook. That's a great price considering there are some sellers asking nearly $500.00 for it. If you're willing to accept a refurbished computer, then B & H Photo-Video-Audio will sell it to you for $299.95. Amazon.com wants $369.00 for a new 1000HE. If you like the PC 1000HA, then, Buy.com wants $330.00. Finally, AGear Notebooks.com is offering the PC 1005HA for $389.00.

A netbook is definitely for limited use cases. Mine is mostly for this site (something I can easily grab and toss in my suitcase when traveling), and casual browsing in bed at night. I already have a laptop for playing games, but found it to be a bit unwieldy in bed.

You raise an interesting point on games. I've found some sites that discuss gaming on netbooks, and it looks like some older games like Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape Torment will work fine, so that might be my next project.

I am fan of the netbook (mostly because I like new toys) -- but I don't think I will ever own one. My wife might one day, but probably not me. I just don't think I can sacrifice the power. I like a computer to be good enough to suit my whim of the moment, so, while it doesn't have to be a super beast of a machine, it has to be able at least support my favourite games. This could be difficult on a tiny screen anyway -- but I'd give it a go.

That said, this one seem to me to be better than many of the ones on the market. I am curious to see what the netbook world will be like once the convertible tablet really starts to push into the market.
