I think you're right - now that Apple has seen the backlash, we'll see if things change going forward.

Apple is doing some strange moves recently. I have several mac computers and I don't really like what they are doing recently, let's see what happens in the future.

Thanks Benry, and no problem posting the link here. Interesting read by Jason. One of the points that jumped out was that if Apple had the iPhone on more platforms, they'd sell more of their other hardware. I think that is true - while I will always have a Windows PC for various reasons (compatibility with specialized programs for work, for one), I have been seriously toying with the idea of getting a Mac as well. The sole reason is because of how much I've liked my iPhone. Ironically, Apple's recent shenanigans have me rethinking that now.

Here's a related post I stumbled onto today, if anyone is still following this:

I hope it's OK to link another blog here. I think you'll find it an interesting commentary, Evan.

That's sort of the blessing and the curse with a Mac. Because Apple controls the OS and the hardware, there is less to go wrong. But, you run into the control issue again. That said, my next computer purchase will be a Mac, to go alongside my Windows PC. The iPhone is elegant enough to have convinced me to give it a try. Plus, curiosity has the best of me.

I'll tell you why I'm pro-Apple... it just works beautifully! I used to be one of those geeks, well, still am, I suppose :) But I got tired of all the crap with Windows and got tired of always having to help others with stuff that just stopped working all of a sudden. Switched to Mac 3,5 years ago - never looked back. About a year ago people finally found out that I didn't do windows any more and stopped asking me for help with their problems, yihaaa :)

By now, half the office is running Mac and I'm spending LESS time troubleshooting and fixing computers, than I did before.

That's just my experience, and that's why most of my tech stuff has an Apple logo nowadays :)

I think you make some very good points. In my opinion, Apple is far more draconian than Microsoft in their approach... yet continue to benefit from a cult-like mentality among much of their fan base.

What delicious irony it is that if it weren't for Microsoft's cash infusion back in the 90s, Apple may have been not much more than a footnote at this point... yet now we regularly discuss whether their tactics are monopolistic.

I'm going to be the first one to reply to my own post, because I've been looking at some coverage (tech sites plus user comments) of the Google Voice App Store situation over lunch, and I'm starting to wonder if this is the straw that broke the camel's back. There seems to be quite the furor over this latest situation. I will be curious to see if it lasts.
